Photography Critique
End of the stock show
In order to make this picture interesting the photographer used lines and curves, as well as focus. Attention is
brought to the cattle stall tie because the photographer focused on one ring and allowed the angle of the
camera to create a line of rings. Additionally, the photographer used the light from the windows to create a
dramatic feel and allow the eye to follow the light along with the line of rings. However, the photo could
incorporate human interest in the photo such as including a stock show exhibitor cleaning up or untying the
cattle. I think that by moving the camera closer to the ground would have given more detail and focus on the
empty stall and left behind hay. The photo is a good use of lines and curves.
Show day for Shorthorns
This photo is a good use of asymmetry and focus. The photo utilizes asymmetry through setting the focus of
the image to the far left of the frame, while placing the people in the far distance and far right. Attention is
brought to the sign through focusing on it and using a shallow depth of field to blur the background. The
picture also incorporates lines through capturing the lights and roof structure. However, the photo could be
stronger through eliminating the busy background, which is a little distracting. But it brings context to the
scene and supports the sign.
Stock show stroll
In order to make this picture interesting the photographer used human interest and tension. Attention is
brought to the little girl because she has tension and a tight hold to her parent’s hands. Tension is also
expressed through the girl’s body language because she is skipping and enjoying her time walking with her
parents. However, the photo could be improved through eliminating the busy and junky background. A more
shallow depth of field could have cleaned up the background and given more focus to the family.
Best seat in the house
This photo is a good use of human interest, asymmetry, lines and use of light. The photo utilizes asymmetry through setting the focus of the image to bottom of the frame, while placing the action in the far distance and top of the frame. The picture also has good human interest because the children and parents are interacting while watching the goat show. Attention is brought to the children and parents through focusing on it and using a shallow depth of field to blur the background. The picture also incorporates lines through capturing
the lights and roof structure. However, the photo could be stronger through get a higher angle and being pulled out a little to include the feet of the parents. The picture could be better through utilizing a stable hand and better framing.
Reflection
Attending the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is an annual event for me and my family. While I was in attendance in at the 2011 market goat show and open Shorthorn show I took the opportunity to capture a few stock show shots. These four photos are my favorite photos out of the several I captured that weekend. Initially, I focused on taking pictures of the animals and exhibitors. However, after an hour or so I became more creative and began capturing the spectators and the atmosphere surrounding the stock show. In order to create interesting photos I used different angles and even climbed on pens to get a bird’s eye view of the show. I enjoyed taking these photos because I got to view and capture new aspects of livestock show life. As a livestock exhibitor I enjoyed going back to the place where I showed and being a photographer of other exhibitors.
